My name is Anna Maslennikov. I am multidisciplinary artist.
"5=3"
These are my numbers: I was pregnant five times to have our three kids. So using creativity and numbers, I want to talk to you about a very personal, sensitive, and painful topic.
MY STORY
Numbers might seem like dry statistics, but sometimes the details are painful.
I leave room for everyone to feel the depth of these numbers as much as they can.
I plan to collect similar numbers worldwide and share them with you.
I was pregnant five times to have our three children.
Once, I had a missed miscarriage at seven weeks. The second time, I lost a baby at 16 weeks. According to American analyses, the baby was healthy.
According to Israeli doctors, the mother's life was more important. And each time, I was saved by the fact that these unsuccessful pregnancies (the second and fourth) were after successful ones. Caring for the children distracted me, and my husband was unafraid to discuss these topics openly.
But I always felt how taboo this topic is in society, how people stiffen and are afraid to talk about it: afraid to hurt you, fearful of their feelings.
I want to embrace all of us and say:
– It's not customary to talk about this because you immediately become a victim in the eyes of others. But if all the girls who lost children at any stage knew the statistics, knew how many around them had gone through this... I'm 1000% sure it would be much easier to endure.
– Sometimes, the body breaks down; sometimes, it makes crucial decisions for us because it feels that something is wrong inside. This doesn't make you bad; such situations shouldn't destroy your desire to have children.
– It's a loss and a tragedy. But many people, not by their own will, get stuck and drown in destructive feelings.
If we could talk about our losses more bravely, we could help others feel that they are not alone. This world hasn't thrown them into open space with a tag saying "unfit."
I can't change the past, but I can't and don't want to deny it.
I sincerely hope you haven't lost children. But if this has happened to you — I hug you tightly. May loving people be with you. May they have the strength to show all their love and care. May you have the strength to accept this love and care.
